Mounting a QC tool post on a 9x20
I found the 4 way tool post on the 9x20 lathe somewhat of a problem because I don't
like to have to use shims in a tool post. I decided to install a #39083 quick change
tool post.
I found also that the original compound seemed a bit weaker than I expected, and
the tool post center bolt was only 10mm. Since the 39083 QC post used a 14mm
center bolt, I would either have to change it or make an entirely new mounting
system for it.
I decided to mount the new post on a steel plinth that would be very solid.
I cut a piece of cold rolled steel plate to 4"x5" and drilled corner holes to fit the slide
"T" slots. Then I drilled and countersunk corner holes in the steel plate that came
with the 39083. It was already tapped for 14 x 1.5mm, and drilling and tapping holes
in the steel plinth for 1/4 x 20 flat head socket screws enabled me to fasten it to the
plinth. Putting in the 14 x 1.5 center bolt furnished a sturdy mount for the QC tool post.
